Remember Your Nature and Destiny

Jesus is the Christian’s hope: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope (1Tim. 1.1 NIV). Paul says the same when writing Titus: while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Tit. 2.13 NIV).

Our hope is living, that is, we wait for eternal life with Christ when His kingdom comes in power: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade (1Pet. 1.3-4 NIV).

Paul teaches us that three attributes currently feature in the righteous Christian Community: faith, hope, and love (see 1Cor. 13.13). Hope is what heartens the Christian to endure the trials and temptations of the world: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all (2Cor.4.16-17 NIV). It is only the Christian worldview that can truly answer the questions: “What am I,” and “What am I becoming.”
