Finding the Bible’s Meaning

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit (1Cor. 2.14 NIV). This verse is complementary to the previous one where the NIV footnote has a reading that makes more sense: interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. James Murphy recognizes the “purposes of the Author” of the bible and that it is knowable. He doesn’t mention the Spirit’s ministry, but Paul prayed for Christians: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit  of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe (Eph. 1.17-19 NIV). Clearly, “the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation” refers to Is. 11.1-3 where He alights on the incarnated “Branch of Jesse” at the start of His ministry. This same Spirit Jesus gives to His followers to understand all the bible (Jn. 14.15-26).
