You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.
Nahal Azal is about a half hours walk from the “Golden Gate” which can be thought to mark the center of this valley. A typical walking pace would be 2/miles per hour, therefore the breadth of the valley would be approximately 2 miles wide. Of course all the graves of the Arab and Jewish cemeteries will be swept aside with the righteous ones resurrected prior to the Messiah’s descent. Zech. 14.4 describes the scene: On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. The Apostles were on the Mount of Olives when Jesus ascended into heaven (Acts 1.12) and while they beheld His departure they were informed of His return to the same place: Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven (vs.11).
Therefore, with the city captured (Zech.14.2), the large valley will to be an escape route for His people going out of the city to Him at Mount Olivet. He will then lead the people and saints back into the city and victory against the invaders (vs. 3). Here is an image of what I believe is a Muslim Chapel which may or may not be the place of Jesus’ ascension. This is located at the top of the hill:
