John, in his first epistle, tells us that God is light; in him there is no darkness at all (1Jn. 1.5b). The attribute of “light” in God is eternal since He cannot change (Mal.3.6, Heb. 6.17-18). God has always been “light” before He created it materially to dispel the darkness of Gen. 1.2. The video link below highlights the two negatives.
The chaos and darkness signal an angelic fall prior to God’s recreation of Gen. 1.3-2.3. There seems to have been a time where giant lizards preyed each other according to the fossil record. The light God creates first (Gen. 1.3) must be righteous and revelatory light since natural light sources were not created until Day 4.
The purpose of material creation was for an expansion of God’s realm. “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight” (Eph. 1.4 NIV). “the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world” (Rev. 13.8 NIV) was to demonstrate the attribute of love. Jesus told the Samaritan woman that God was spirit and that it was necessary to worship Him in truth and in His Spirit. The Word becoming flesh (John 1.14) was now permanent as opposed to Jesus assuming flesh prior to this time, for instance, when meeting with Abraham.
In spite of God’s light, Satan tricked humans to sin, and in this way, he remained in control, continuing the kingdom of darkness and death. God provides a remedy of a righteous substitute to save His people: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (Jn. 8.12 NIV). Paul’s letter to the Colossians makes this explicit: For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Col. 1.13-14 NIV).
