Double Predestination and Annihilation of the Wicked are Complementary

Only the devil, beast, and false prophet of Rev. 20.10 will have everlasting torment according to that text. While “everlasting punishment” is found in several places in the bible, evidently, it seems to need pointing out that annihilation is “everlasting punishment.”

Humans were created innocent and mortal. That the Tree of Life in Eden promised eternal life proves that Adam and Eve were created with native mortality. Scripture affirms our mortality in 1 Cor. 15. 22-23 which speaks of dying in Adam but being made alive in Christ. Further, while there is a resurrection of the unrighteous (Acts 24.15), that event does not occur until Final Judgment. The redeemed resurrection happens when Christ returns at the Last Trumpet’s sounding (1Cor. 15.23), (1Cor. 15.52). 1Cor. 15.42-54 speaks clearly and exclusively about the righteous resurrection of those in Christ: When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory (1Cor. 15.54 NIV).

Jesus also speaks of annihilation of the wicked in Gehenna in Mt. 10.28: Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell (NIV).
