What did sin get us? Death, dead to God just as He said. The devil claimed that we would be like God if the first couple ate the fruit but that was a hollow advantage. In fact, the couple were already like God in creation since they were created in His image. Now, after the Fall, humans play God illegitimately and others are hurt through this sin.

While it could be said that Adam and Eve were created innocent, they were unconfirmed as righteous. Righteousness is positive, it is more than mere innocence. God said they would die if they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and they did die in the sense that they are now on the path to eventual destruction and separated from the source of all life, God Himself. Unredeemed humans now experience a living death; they are like misguided zombies chasing after things that will never quench their desires.

Jesus mentions this state of death as inherent in humans and that He is the hope of redemption through His word and work on the cross: Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life (Jn. 5.24 NIV).
